Canada

My great country. I use to be very involved in Canadian politics, but lost interest after studying politics in university. Surprisingly, my loss of interest did not end the political system in Canada. So now things happen and I cringe, or am pleasantly surprised. I look at the rest of the world and I think we ain't got it too bad here. Can't stand Stephen Harper and the conservatives, reminds me of a Canadian version of George Bush and the Republicans. Watch this page for thoughts on issues as they arise.

January 23, 2006 : Rushed Thoughts on the Election.

The idea of a conservative government lead by Stephen Harper, terrifies me. The fear is not from the Liberal insistence of the terror of social conservatism, but rather, the man's eyes. They say it all. Evil. Reminds me of George Bush. Evil.

Ultimately sad state of affairs around the way the media has covered (or not covered) the election. No questioning of how some one can change all their core beliefs inside of 14 months. Only as we enter the last weekend has the media decided that it's worth discussion. This absence includes the liberal Star. At one point I was so sure, from the coverage, that the Star had changed it's politics. The reporting for this election reminded me of the journalism of the Bush administration's claims of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and the invasion of Iraq.

It was only during the last weekend that the media reminded us of the others running for the Conservatives. The same folks who would have women follow, immigration stopped, gay marriage laws reversed, and abortions outlawed. THe media likes to describe these candidates of having successfully been muzzled by Conservative HQ. I thought it was the media that had all the muzzles!

I have faith in Canadians. I have faith that enough people, as in 2004, will see through the branding, deceit and reject this abomination. A conservative minority with strong contingent of NDP MPs, the best of a bad situation.

And the results

Well, I had the faith and was let down, mind you the press sure helped steer Canadians in the wrong direction. Now we have this "Conservative" minority. There is no opposition, so Harper has been getting away with whatever. Liberals don't want to upset the cart, NDP well only if, but it's Jack that leads them. You know, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jumped here there and everywhere.
